Sigurd 2024 Chenin Blanc - Clare Valley

Tasting Notes
Concentrated lemon and golden apple open the palate, followed by hints of brined citrus and quince. Gentle layers of nutmeg spice and cashew butter lend warmth and depth, sitting over a fine, chalky texture that feels alive and mineral. There’s a precision to the acidity - focused, linear - yet the wine holds a quiet richness that builds with time in the glass.

Variety: 100% Chenin Blanc (Clare Valley)
Alcohol: 13.4 %

Origin + Winemaking
From one of the most northern and elevated Chenin blocks in Clare Valley - an over 60-year-old, organically farmed vineyard that consistently delivers fruit with purity and drive. Picked around 12.5° baumé and whole-bunch pressed to a mix of older French and Slovenian oak puncheons, with a 1000L European oak cask in the mix.

The fruit was pressed firmly to extract texture and phenolic detail that drives the wine on the palate. The wine fermented naturally on full lees for around 12 days, completed full malolactic fermentation, and rested in oak until June 2025, before being gently racked to stainless steel tanks for another 3 months with a minimal sulphur addition before bottling.

Style: Medium-bodied, dry white wine
Vineyard: Clare Valley, South Australia
Best With: Braised leeks with cream, wine and tarragon + fillet of Boar fish
Drink: Now or over the next 10 years

The Story Beneath the Glass

In Norse myth, the goddess Idunn guards the golden apples of immortality - fruit that keeps the gods forever renewed. Each harvest, she gathers them with care and patience, preserving the light of life itself.

This Chenin carries that same quiet spirit - fruit from old vines, made with restraint and time. Its golden apple brightness and textural depth echo the balance between vitality and wisdom; its chalky edge and savoury undertones speak of place and patience.

Like Idunn’s fruit, this wine is both alive and enduring - a reminder that true beauty in wine, as in life, is found in what’s tended, aged, and deeply understood.

I’ve been enjoying Dan’s superb wines for a few years now, particularly the Chenin Blanc. I first came across that wine in a small (but fancy) bistro in Sydney, then chased down Dan on-line to see if he any for purchase. Of course he’d sold out of all stock - damn! But a few days later he reached out to tell me he’d found a spare case in the shed, and would I like it? I’ve been a frequent flyer ever since! Thanks Dan!

I just wanted to say I fell in love with your Chenin when I had it on a trip to Tassie (at a small wine bar where the host said I had to try it) and I'm so glad I've got bottles of it on the way. It was my first ever Chenin and I'm yet to find one (Aussie, SA or FRA) that beats it. Cheers!!!
